First Sunrise of Winter

Of course, it's warm enough here to go outside barefoot. It will most likely be sunny and 70 this afternoon. Reason #3,247 why I like living here. The weather people say it should cool down before Christmas gets here...

Clear Sky Sunset

Aside from having a fascination with sunsets, I've lately just been obsessed with the sky in general. Oh well. Beats politics or football any day!
This was what I saw leaving the gym tonight. The sun was setting with very few clouds and a red glow was rising all around. Me thinks 'twill be brisk come daybreak...

Stormy Sunset

This was the view of some storms to the east of here on Sunday evening. With the sun setting behind me, the clouds were lit up nicely. It was cool to stand there and watch the lightning inside them.

The Greenbrier River - Cass, WV

File under: Happy place...

CHOO CHOOOO!!!

The Cass Scenic Railroad - Cass, WV

If you're in Cass, WV - try going for a ride up the side of a mountain on a train! It's really a fun thing to do especially if you have small ones. These are old logging trains that are especially built for steep climbs. If you have all afternoon, you can take a 4 hour trip that will take you to Bald Knob (I have no idea what that name might mean...) where you can see for miles around.
We took the shorter tour to Whitaker Station which is also fun but only requires 2 hours of your day.

Back at the main station you can get souvenirs, food and (if a guy named T. J. is working) a really awesome hot fudge milkshake. Ask for chocolate ice cream (instead of vanilla) and enjoy! Or go with peanut butter shake. Or just plain chocolate. Either way, this is a good place to stop and if you're a river lover like me, there's the Greenbrier River just on the other side of the parking lot. A great place to cool your heals, skip rocks and relax after a long day on the railroad!

National Radio Astronomy Observatory - Green Bank, WV

One of the dishes on display at the entrance.

The NRAO in Green Bank, WV is a great place to visit. There's a free tour and exhibit with lots of fun facts and hands on things for both adults and kids. The dishes themselves are a sight to behold and the food at the cafe inside is good too (as well as reasonably priced). Just don't plan on using your cell phone AT ALL while you're there. It won't work. There are no cell phone towers anywhere near the super sensitive radio telescopes to "cut down on interference" or as I like to say, to keep E.T. from phoning home.

The day we went was particularly beautiful (as you can see) and we even got to look at sun spots through a solar telescope. If you're ever in Green Bank, I highly recommend this stop. Plus, it's mostly funded by tax dollars so you've already paid for it - why not enjoy it?

Enlightenment

I see amazing things everywhere I look. Some people miss out on the beauty all around them because they choose not to look for. I strive to not be one of those people.

A new blog...

I'm going to try photo blogging for a while. Might take a few days for me to get it all going...
